I am a bilingual and indigenous Hong Kong-American journalist. I write, edit and produce stories across platforms about business, science, technology and culture. Currently, I write Business Insider’s daily markets newsletter, 10 Things Before the Opening Bell, and I’m a contributing sustainability-business reporter for GreenBiz.
I’ve reported for Fortune Magazine, Business Insider, Buzzfeed News, GreenBiz, US-China Today, The Thousand Oaks Acorn, NATA News, Annenberg Media, Annenberg Sports, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Intrepid Times, Insider Life, The Writing Cooperative, Flique Editorial and Achiever Network, among others. Many of my articles have gone viral, or have been shared by celebrities across social media. From February 2019 to January 2021, I was one of the top writers on Medium.com.
After earning my Bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and philosophy at San Diego State University, I moved to Hong Kong where I lived in my family’s aboriginal village, which was built over 700 years ago. I spent nearly two years traveling through Southeast Asia, working as an editor for the Chinese University of Hong Kong newspaper and running my travel blog, Phil’s Next Stop. Then, I had brief stints living in Spain and Germany prior to returning to the US for graduate school at the University of Southern California.
Before my Master’s degree, I released my travel memoir, Everywhere But Home: Life Overseas as Told by a Travel Blogger, which became a #1 Amazon bestseller across six different categories, including Travel Writing and Hong Kong History. The book details my post-grad experiences teaching English in Hong Kong, taking mud baths with elephants in Thailand, exploring temples in Bali, riding motorcycles in Taiwan, peering across the border of North Korea and more.
In addition to my work in journalism, I’m currently working on a collection of fiction short stories to be published in 2022.
